  1. You are operating on a missing network connection
  2. It may be possible that the file you are trying to open is not present in the local system. Or it is saved in the removable device that is not connected to the system.

There are chances that you are attempting to import the file or attachment that does not exist in the directory

  • Make sure that the network connections and adapters are in good working condition. Then, retry to open the emails to fix “file does not exist” error in Lotus Notes.
  • Disconnect the external storage device or drive, replace it and then select the mail to be opened.
  • Be careful about the specific location of the directory where the files are stored. Examine again to make sure that the opted directory location is right.
  • Make sure that key files- names.nsf, desktop.ndk, bookmark.nsf, and cache.ndk- exist in the Notes\Data directory. If it is not so, then NTF equivalent files should be present in Notes\Data directory.

2. When a user Tries to Archive the Email
The users can archive emails to migrate old emails which are not required anymore. The option to archive facilitates the user to minimize the database size. While archiving the emails, the error can emerge and the process can be stopped in between.

Reason: This error may prompt if the archive NSF file is renamed or removed from the directory.
Solution:
Navigate to File >> Database >> Properties and then Archive Settings. From here, check if the file is renamed or deleted. In case the file is missing, generate an NSF file or if there is an issue with the name of the file, rename the required file at the same location.

3. When the Notes Application is Opened After Upgrading It
Reason:
If you are updating the Lotus Notes application with another user account, there are chances that the error may occur. The error message that prompts on the screen is “file does not exist” in Lotus Notes
Solution:
This error can be avoided by using the same user account with which the previous edition was installed to update the Notes application. As soon as the installation process is complete, restart the Lotus Notes application. This measure will take care that the error message does not occur.

4. When The User Tries to Access Mail in Local Replica
If you access any email in the local replica, the error message may prompt on the screen:

Reason:
The cause of this error is when you use local replica in alternative to server copy. Another reason for this error can be mistakenly deletion of Notes temporary file (.DTF). It also happens that the temporary files are deleted due to some anti-virus activities.
